Stable Isotope Laboratory

Applications of Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS)

The Stable Isotope Laboratory (IsoLab) of the Grassland Sciences Group is run by Dr. Roland A. Werner and Annika Ackermann. It is equipped with four isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IRMS) and six peripheral devices, which allow the measurement of:

  • δ13C and δ15N of solid samples
  • δ2H and δ18O of aqueous and solid samples
  • δ13C and δ18O of CO2 in air
  • Content measurements of carbon and nitrogen of solid samples

The original research area of IRMS was in geology, mainly in thermometry and (palaeo)climatology. However, since the fifties, many applications in chemistry, biology, medicine and food authenticity (to name only a few) were added. Only recently, stable isotopes were used to study ecological processes and systems. For more technical information, see the external pageisogeochem webpage.
